John Tenniel (1820–1914) gave some of literature’s strangest characters their definitive faces. His illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass turned talking rabbits, grinning cats, card soldiers, and impossible creatures into images that still feel instantly familiar.
